The Czech Republic has granted asylum to 10 Cubans at the request of the USA that turned to its European allies for the sake of Cuban refugees. In each of the families concerned someone was persecuted and imprisoned over his/her political opinion or religion. The families managed to flee from Cuba on the fourth try only.
Since their arrival in Prague on March 20, they have had provisional accommodation in a village near Prague. Czech Interior Minister Ivan Langer (Civic Democrats, ODS) asked the Prague City Hall to provide flats for the refugees. Prague will provide them on the basis of the state integration programme under which the city should annually secure housing to 32 asylum holders, Janecek said. On similar occasions Prague receives a state subsidy of 150,000 crowns per flat tenant and further 50,000 per person sharing household with the tenant. "The rent contracts are signed for a definite period. The state subsidies are used to cover the costs of repairs in the flats and of the arrangement of their surroundings," Janecek said. Prague has provided housing to 131 asylum holders in the past four years. ($1=20.898 crowns)
