The Prague Civic Democrats have basically confirmed Bem's position that if President Vaclav Klaus is not re-elected next year, the cabinet of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (ODS) would fall. Topolanek was not present at the regional conference of the Prague ODS.
He said earlier he did not agree with the scenario. Topolanek stresses the presidential election was not part of the coalition agreement. Bem said Prague was the strongest ODS region. Prague deputies are more numerous than those for the Christian Democrats and the Greens, he added. "It is a voice that must be heard," Bem said. Czech PM gives Education Minister ultimatum - press ... go to extreme lengths to make Klaus re-elected, Bem said, adding that the position would certainly be supported by 99 percent of delegates to the forthcoming national party congress. Klaus may be challenged by economist Jan Svejnar, who has been supported by the Greens and with some reservations also by the opposition Social Democrats (CSSD). The latter say that Svejnar must gain the support of further parties, the Communists (KSCM) in particular. Svejnar has been backed by the Open Democracy Club and the Association of Independent Candidates in the Senate. The Communists are to voice their position in early December.
