Czech candidate for education minister pledges to increase budget ... Liska [as minister] should take place as quickly as possible.
In any case we will wait until Sunday's meeting of the SZ national council which should approve the nomination," Jacques told reporters. She said Liska might be appointed minister early next week. Jacques said that the SZ national council, i.e. the party's broad leadership, will obtain only a single candidate's name, Liska's, for assessment. SZ chairman Martin Bursik's internal opponents, headed by SZ deputy head and former education minister Dana Kuchtova, demanded that the SZ leadership offer two candidates to the national council to choose from - Liska, an MP and SZ deputy chairman, and MP Olga Zubova. It ensued from Jacques's statement today that Zubova would not compete with Liska for the nomination. Jacques said that Zubova expressed support for Liska at a SZ meeting last night and that SZ deputies will do the same at the national council meeting. "I don't know any relevant reservations about Mr Liska that could cast doubt on his nomination," Jacques added. On Sunday, Dalibor Strasky resigned as SZ national council head in protest against Bursik's ousting the council from the ministerial nomination process. Bursik, deputy prime minister, insists it is exclusively up to the party's presidium (inner leadership) to choose the new minister. Kuchtova criticises Bursik's approach and says the latest developments reflect the continuing rift in the party. The SZ is the smallest party in the lower house, with six deputies out of the house's total 200.
