28.01.2008 - Greens not to change stance on president after meeting Klaus

Bursik said the meeting confirmed the Greens' fears of Klaus's opinions about environmental issues and the European Union. The one and a half hour long debate ended up in a verbal clash between Klaus and Bursik before TV cameras. Klaus said Bursik's assessment of the meeting was unfair and cowardly. Greesn deputies'Katerina Jacques confirmed to journalists that Klaus and the Greens keep having different opinions. Klaus recommended that the Greens change some of their stances. The Greens criticised Klaus over his negative stance on the climate change theory which, they say, he trivialised. Today they and Klaus also quarrelled about the issue of animal species on the verge of extinction. Greens MPs indicated beforehand that their meeting with Klaus would be a purely polite visit. The Greens have proposed economist Svejnar, 55, for president.

He was officially nominated by four senators' groups, including the opposition Social Democrat (CSSD). He will contest Klaus, 66, nominated by the senior ruling Civic Democratic Party (ODS) of which he is honorary chairman, in the election to start at a joint session of the two houses of parliament on February 8. Klaus and Svejnar have already met representatives of several deputies'and senators' groups. In view of the balance of forces in parliament, Klaus is considered the election favourite. The opposition Communists (KSCM), along with the junior ruling Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), seem to be the parties that might tip the scales.
