the EP for the second time reprimanded the Czech Republic over the controversial pig farm. The committee today said it would see to a dignified monument being built to commemorate the camp's Romany victims. "After many years for which the site was manipulated without our involvement, we will no longer allow anyone to meddle in the future monument's shape," Ruzicka said. The committee has for a long time demanded the removal of the pig farm from the site of the former camp where a total of 1,308 Romanies were interned during World War Two, 327 died there and more than 500 ended up in the Oswiecim (Auschwitz) extermination camp. The committee and the victims' relatives say the pig farm disgraces the victims' memory. The South Bohemia region has recently announced it wants to build a monument to the Romany victims worth 50 million crowns in the pig farm's vicinity. The region has refused to initiate the farm's transfer as what it called an inappropriate measure. The Committee today called on the government to adopt a resolution pledging to secure a new place for the farm by a firmly set deadline. It proposed that the promised 50 million crowns be sent to a fund from which the pig farm's transfer would be financed.

The government should deposit a similar sum in the fund every year. It should also ask international institutions for financial support and it should start negotiating with the AGPI firm, the farm's operator, about the price for which the farm could be bought out, the committee says. AGPI director Jan Cech told CTK last week that AGPI was ready to transfer the pig farm elsewhere for an "adequate compensation." Dzamila Stehlikova, Czech minister in charge of human rights and minorities, previously said she considers the pig farm's removal "an inter-mediate goal" the achievement of which would "take years."
