However, some senior officials of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS, senior governing coalition member) have said behind the scenes that the election has seriously harmed the coalition.
The ODS has proposed incumbent President Vaclav Klaus to the presidential election, but the Greens nominated Jan Svejnar, who was also backed by the opposition Social Democrats (CSSD).
Neither of the candidates eventually won today's election that will be repeated on February 15.
"We are not primarily against the ODS, but we are supporting our candidate Svejnar against Klaus," Liska said.
Liska said he realised "some political costs will be paid by the coalition," but this should not be exaggerated.
