The dispute between supporters of a secret ballot and a public vote has lasted for a couple of weeks. Last Friday, the joint session of both houses of parliament reached a deadlock over it and the election was accompanied by behind-the-scene bargaining, squabbling and trading of offences. In the end the legislators voted for president in show of hands. No president was elected in the three rounds of the first election on February 8-9. Another three-round election will be held on Friday, February 15. Incumbent President Vaclav Klaus, 66, nominated by the senior ruling Civic Democratic Party (ODS) of which he is honorary chairman, will again run against economist Jan Svejnar, 55, who alternately lives in the Untied States and Czech Republic. He was nominated by four senator groups including the CSSD and the junior government Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL). He was first proposed by the junior ruling Green Party. The third presidential candidate is MEP Jana Bobosikova, nominated by the opposition Communists (KSCM).
