Klaus, Svejnar to duel in Czech Senate ahead of elections - press ...
Czech Communists still evasive about presidential candidate ... third rounds but would not give their votes to him in the next phases of the voting, Filip said.
The Communists have opted for the same course they used in the first presidential election a week ago in which neither Klaus nor Svejnar were elected president.
"We will act in such a way to allow both candidates to advance to the second and third rounds," Filip said.
He said that Svejnar, who is supported by the senior opposition Social Democrats (CSSD), cannot expect the Communists to support him after CSSD chairman Jiri Paroubek's speech which was not fair towards the Communists.
Since MEP Jana Bobosikova, nominated by the Communists, withdrew her candidacy before the voting today, the lawmakers will be choosing between Svejnar and Klaus.
If the KSCM supports Svejnar in the first round, both candidates would advance to the next rounds.
According to available information, Klaus would thus have a chance to win at least 141 votes in the third round that he needs to be re-elected.
Filip said the Communists did not force Bobosikova to withdraw her candidacy and that she herself realistically assessed the situation.
"I had to inform her that I have not been able to ensure political support for her," Filip said.
Bobosikova told journalists that being a realistic politician, she comprehended that she had no support and therefore decided to withdraw her candidacy.
