The government coalition, including also the Greens and the senior ruling Civic Democrats (ODS), should take steps to allow for the inclusion of the change in the Czech constitution as soon as possible, Cunek said. The ODS, the KDU-CSL and the Greens have pledged to open a discussion on the direct presidential election in the coalition agreement, but they are not united on the issue. The ODS tends to support the traditional election by parliament, while its junior partners prefer a president elected by citizens. The parliament re-elected President Vaclav Klaus for the next five years in the third round of the second election on February 15.
