According to the source, the EU member states failed to find a joint position on the problem of U.S.
visa requirements today and the EU interior ministers will try to overcome the standing differences at their meeting in Brussels on Thursday. There is a 50-50 percent chance that the EU members will adopt a united position on the issue, the source told. He said that the countries which are included in the U.S. visa waiver programme would like to postpone the talks with the USA on visa lifting for all EU countries while the countries whose citizens have to have visas while travelling to the USA are pressing for a quick solution to the situation. The core of the dispute is whether individual EU countries should negotiate visa lifting with the USA on their own, like the Czech Republic, or not. Negotiations between representatives of the EU and the USA on visa questions will take place in Slovenia on March 13. Slovenia who holds the EU rotating presidency and the European Commission want the EU to agree on a joint position by this time.
