It also found that people often do not know who represents the Czech Republic in the European Parliament. One-third of respondents believe that the Czech MEPs act jointly in Brussels in representing the Czech Republic. According to STEM, the views on the work of the Czech MEPs in the EP depend mainly on the respondents' satisfaction with the Czech Republic's membership in the European Parliament. Of the people who are satisfied with the EU membership almost one half believe that Czech MEPs defend the interests of Czech citizens well and of the people who are not satisfied with the Czech EU membership 15 percent hold this view. The respondents' views depend on whether they are interested in the work of the MEPs and on whether they know what they do in the European Parliament. Almost 60 percent of the respondents who watch with interests the MEPs' activities believe that they can influence decisions to the Czech Republic's benefit. It is most often supporters of the senior ruling Civic Democrats and junior government Green Party that does not have its representatives in the European parliament who assess the work of the Czech MEPs positively. Supporters of the Communist Party (KSCM) that has six members in the European Parliament, the second largest representation among Czech political parties, are very critical of the work of the Czech MEPs, the poll showed. Even among the ODS supporters negative assessments prevail over positive. The STEM poll also showed that Czech public has forgotten the Czech representatives in the EP since election to the European Parliament in 2004.
Most of respondents were unable to remember any name. Czech European Commissioner Vladimir Spidla is the most known Czech politician in the EU, according to the poll. The Czech Republic has 24 members in the European Parliament. The poll was conducted from January 29 to February 7, 2008 on 1423 respondents.
