04.03.2008 - Klaus to commemorate Masaryk,St Wenceslas as new Czech president

Klaus paid tribute to Masaryk in his first inauguration five years ago as well.

This year, he will also lay flowers to the bodily remains of St Wenceslas, the saint patron of Czechs, in St Vitus's Cathedral at Prague Castle. A military parade will traditionally accompany the inauguration. On Friday morning, Klaus will lay a wreath at the Masaryk statue outside Prague Castle. at Prague Castle to take his oath at a joint session of the two houses of parliament that will start at 10:00. The ceremony will be attended besides deputies, senators and government members, also by other public life personalities, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of churches, universities and the military, regional governors and senior representatives of the judiciary. Former president Vaclav Havel and his wife Dagmar will also attend the ceremony. No foreign statesmen have been invited, according to the Presidential Office. Klaus will be sworn in by Chamber of Deputies chairman Miloslav Vlcek, (opposition Social Democrats). Klaus will then make his first speech in his second term. His mandate will expire in 2013. He cannot run for the presidential post for a third time in succession according to the constitution. Defence Minister Vlasta Parkanova (Christian Democrats, KDU-CSL) will accompany Klaus at the military parade. The remembrance of St Wenceslas's bodily remains will follow the parade. The ceremony will be completed with a meeting in Spanish Hall of Prague Castle where Klaus will receive congratulations from guests.
