German Chancellor Angela Merkel has met with her Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern in Dublin for talks on the EU Reform Treaty.
On June 12 Ireland will vote in a referendum on the treaty, which is designed to streamline EU decision-making. Ireland is the only EU member to put the treaty to a popular referendum. Merkel was pushing the case for a yes vote on the treaty, a replacement for the defunct EU constitution. That document was rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005. Merkel said the new treaty would bring benefits even to the sceptics who oppose it; and tried to allay fears that the treaty meant assimilation into a European super state.
