Outgoing Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has accepted an offer to lead the country's ruling party.

for Putin. Putin, who is constitutionally obliged to step down from the presidency, also confirmed that he would become prime minister next month. Meanwhile, Russia's president-elect, Dmitry Medvedev, has declined an invitation to join United Russia, saying he should stay above party politics. Many observers are waiting to see if a power struggle emerges between the posts of prime minister and president when Putin makes way for Medvedev on May 7.
