France's lower house of parliament has adopted a groundbreaking bill that would make it illegal to incite extreme thinness.
The bill would especially apply to fashion magazines, advertisers and Web sites. The National Assembly approved the bill on Tuesday. It is expected to go before the Senate in the coming weeks. Fashion industry experts said that if the law is passed it will be the strongest of its kind anywhere. Leaders in the French couture industry are opposed to the idea of legal boundaries on beauty standards.
