German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she backs European targets to boost biofuels in spite of the current food crisis.
She told the German paper "Bild am Sonntag" that she supports the EU's aim of achieving a ten percent biofuel usage by 2020. Merkel said that processing maize or rape was not the main reason for the current food problems. She emphasised that less than three percent of global area under crops were used for biofuels. The Chancellor said she would argue for a common strategy at the G8 summit in Japan in July. This also included the issue of financial speculation with staple foods.
