Russia's defence ministry has announced an increase in peacekeeping forces to the two rebel Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in response to what it called aggressive moves by pro-Western Georgia.

Some 3,000 Russians currently serve in the two regions. Georgia, which accuses Moscow of attempting to annex the territories, rejected the Russian military's allegations and called the announced troop increase unacceptable. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana criticised Russia's move at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
