Uganda rebels walk out of talks ... cannons to break up crowds of workers trying to reach a main Istanbul square for a May Day rally that had been banned by the government. There was a heavy police presence on the streets of the city after labour organisations said they would defy the ban. They were eventually forced to abandon their plans to march to Taksim Square. Government officials said they had imposed the ban after receiving intelligence reports that radical groups were planning violent protests. They said that more than 500 demonstrators were detained and six police officers injured in the clashes.
