Extra Russian troops have begun arriving in the Georgian separatist region of Abkhazia.
The deployment comes despite strong objections from Tbilisi, as well as the Western military alliance, NATO, which views Georgia as a potential future member. NATO has accused Moscow of stoking tensions in the region. Russia said earlier this week it would add 1,000 troops to the 2,000 peacekeepers already stationed in Abkhazia to discourage Georgian plans to attack. Tbilisi has denied any plans to attack Abkhazia, which has been governing itself with support from Moscow since breaking away from Georgia in the early 1990s.
