02.05.2008 - Zimbabwe to face presidential run-off vote

Zimbabwe's election commission says a run-off vote is needed between President Robert Mugabe and his main challenger in the presidential race Morgan Tsvangirai.

The Czech Republic news are represented by www.prague-apartments-hotels.com

Election officials said said that while Tsvangirai had beaten Mugabe in the March 29 poll, he had won only about 48 per cent of the vote - less than the 50 per cent required for an outright win. Mugabe had won about 43 per cent. Tsvangirai's opposition Movement for Democratic Change has rejected the official tallies, saying its own count gives him 50.3 percent, just enough to win outright and avoid a run-off. The MDC accuses Mugabe supporters of rigging the vote.
