Opposition Conservative candidate Boris Johnson has been elected mayor of London, defeating Labour incumbent Ken Livingstone. Results showed that Johnson won the support of 1.16 million Londoners in Thursday's election, compared with just over a million for Livingstone, who first took up the post in 2000.
The victory in London followed widespread defeat for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour party in local elections in England and Wales. Brown blamed poor economic conditions for the outcome of the elections.
