03.05.2008 - Burma referendum must respect political freedoms: Security Council

The UN Security Council has called on Burma's military government to ensure that fundamental political freedoms are respected in the referendum on a new constitution later this month.

to Friday's text, which dropped all references to detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It also dropped language saying the military junta in Rangoon should guarantee free expression, association and assembly in the political process leading to the referendum. Burma's UN Ambassador Kyaw Tint Swe called the council statement "highly objectionable".
