German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats want Germany to have a National Security Council modelled on the one in the US. According to reports to be published in Sunday's edition of the 'Welt am Sonntag' newspaper and the weekly news magazine 'Der Spiegel', the proposed body, to be set up in the federal chancellery office, would analyse possible threats to security and crises at home and abroad.
The plan has been criticised by both junior coalition partners the Social Democrats and the opposition Free Democrats.
