assess how far Poland has proceeded in its negotiations to date. The negotiations on missile defence and on Polish military's modernisation have each reached halfway approximately, he said. The USA wants to install interceptor missiles in Poland as part of its planned missile shield in Europe, which is also to include a radar in the Czech Republic. While the Czech Republic is expected to complete its negotiations with the USA soon, the Polish negotiations have got protracted. Unlike the Czech Republic, Poland demands as a condition for its consent that the USA supply it with the Patriot or THAAD systems and invest further millions of dollars in the Polish army modernisation. Wasczykowski said Poland and the U.S. base on its soil should be protected appropriately. Poland is a country situated on the edge of the EU and NATO. Up to now, there has been no allied military installation on Polish territory, he pointed out, adding that the U.S.-Polish talks would continue in Poland this week. Wasczykowski said Warsaw realises that presidential elections have drawn near in the USA. He said Warsaw does not expect any fundamental change in the U.S. policy under the new president. In his opinion, the new U.S. governnment will continue considering countries such as Iran to be a threat, he said. Both U.S. Republicans and Democrats have voiced support for the project, Wasczykowski said. He said the Polish public is split over the installation of the U.S. base on Polish soil. Those who are opposed to it have inaccurate information, he said. A part of Poles believe that the planned base is a nuclear installation, Wasczykowski said. Some believe the base would tie Poland with the USA forever. Some believe that Poland would have to fight everywhere along with the USA [if the base were built in Poland], Wasczykowski said. He said it is difficult to provide information to the Polish public now that the negotiations are still underway. The advantages ensuing from the base's installation would become more evident after the talks are completed, he said.
