Chinese President Hu Jintao has arrived in Japan to try to boost ties between the Asian powers despite rifts over energy resources and security.
Hu is the first Chinese head of state to visit Japan in 10 years. Thousands of police have been deployed to guard the Chinese leader, amid fears of pro-Tibet demonstrations. At a summit on Wednesday Hu and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda hope to unveil a joint blueprint for managing ties in coming years. China suspended high-level contact with Japan from 2001 to 2006 during the premiership of Junichiro Koizumi.
