The 17 states in the border-free "Schengen" zone of the European Union have said they will issue free visas to all valid applicants from Serbia.

EU says Serbia deal on hold ... a crucial election in Serbia on May 11, which will determine whether Serbia pursues closer ties with the EU, as advocated by President Tadic, or embraces the nationalist policies of Serbia's hard-line Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica. Tensions between the EU and Serbia have been high since the EU's support of Kosovo's independence. Serbia considers recognition of the breakaway province a violation of international law.
