Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has denied allegations of bribery, dating back to when he was mayor of Jerusalem and industry minister.
In a statement broadcast live on local TV and radio stations, Olmert admitted to receiving funds from a US businessman for his election campaign, but denied ever accepting bribes. He added that he would resign if indicted. Israel's justice ministry says it is investigating a period from 1998 to 2006 before Olmert became prime minister. The scandal has cast a cloud over Olmert's future as Israel celebrates its 60th anniversary.
