The crisis erupted after the government on Tuesday sacked the head of security at Beirut airport, and announced it was taking action against Hezbollah's military communications network. Both measures have been overturned by the army. The government backdown was announced by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora in a televised address. Witnesses say that Hezbollah has begun to withdraw from the streets of the capital, Beirut, and turn it over to the army, ending a crisis which threatened to topple the country into civil war.
