Mugabe rival wins key supporter ... in a second round of voting if international observers and media were granted full access to the polls. Official results from the March 29 first round of voting gave Tsvangirai 47.9 percent of the vote, compared with 43.2 percent for Mugabe. But his Movement for Democratic Change has claimed that it had figures that showed that Tsvangirai took more than 50 percent of the vote, which would have been enough to have avoided the need for a run-off. Tsvangirai, who has been in self-imposed exile in South Africa for the past few weeks, also said he planned to return to Zimbabwe soon.
