The EU has welcomed the victory of pro-European forces in Sunday's parliamentary elections in Serbia.
In a first statement after Belgrade's electoral commission confirmed the results, Slovenia, currently chair of the EU presidency, hailed the victory of President Boris Tadic's alliance. His Democratic Party-bloc garnered nearly 39 percent while the ultra-nationalist Radical Party won 29 percent. Tadic said the result confirmed a clear European path. There had been predictions of a possible nationalist backlash over widespread EU support for the independence of Serbia's breakaway province of Kosovo.
