Family and close contacts to Sudanese opposition leader Hassan al-Turabi say he has been released after 15 hours of detention. Government security forces questioned al-Turabi and then released him without pressing charges.
He had been arrested early on Monday morning following a raid by Darfur rebels against the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. The Sudanese government accuses neighbouring Chad of backing the rebels. Chad denies this, countering that Sudan was behind an attempt earlier this year to oust President Idriss Deby.
