Lebanon's military has said it will use force to stop gun battles between pro- and anti-government forces.
The army, which has so far remained neutral, has stepped up patrols as part of a drive to restore order after six days of clashes between Hezbollah fighters and pro-government gunmen. At least 60 people have been killed and over 200 wounded in the gunbattles which have put much of Beirut and its surroundings under Hezbollah control. An Arab League delegation is expected in Beirut in a bid to end the violence. Meanwhile, the unstable situation has forced the country's parliament to postpone yet again a vote to pick a new president since former president Emile Lahoud gave up the post last November.
