in a debate on public Czech Television, Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS) said if the compromises [wrung out by the "rebel" deputies] exceeded the admissible level, determined by the government's policy statement, "the coalition would simply cease to exist." "If the coalition did not fulfil its election programme, it has no right to rule," Topolanek said. He followed up his own interview in Saturday's issue of the daily Mlada fronta Dnes where he said the coalition is threatened and the government could fall in the autumn if the coalition failed to restore its majority in the Chamber of Deputies by then. Apart from Topolanek's ODS, the centre-right coalition comprises Jiri Cunek's Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and Martin Bursik's Greens (SZ). The current coalition parties have 100 seats in the 200-seat lower house. The government's survival and success of its crucial projects has been enabled by Milos Melcak and Michal Pohanka, two "defectors" from the opposition Social Democratic Party (CSSD). In the past months, however, certain deputies from each of the three government parties have challenged some of the government's key projects. Addressed by CTK, leaders of the five parties in parliament said they do not expect the coalition's current trouble to result in the collapse of the government. They pointed, among other things, to the need of the reforms the government parties had pledged to implement.
