Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has sought to ease Iranian fears over a proposed security pact with the United States. During a visit to Tehran, Maliki said his government would not allow Iraq to become a launching pad for an attack on Iran.
Iranian state media reported that Maliki made the pledge during meetings with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other senior officials. Washington is seeking to finalise a deal that would allow the US to maintain military bases in Iraq long term.
