French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel are holding a one-day summit meeting in the southern German town of Straubing.

Slovakia to join the euro next year ... the talks, Berlin conceded that there was little hope of resolving a row over European plans to reduce carbon emissions from cars by 2012. Germany opposes the plans which would favour smaller, less pollutive French cars over the larger German models. Another contentious issue is Sarkozy's proposal to cap value-added tax on oil across the EU to help countries deal with soaring oil prices.
