United States President George W.
Bush has opened a farewell US-European Union summit in Slovenia, where he is expected to work with allies to increase pressure on Iran over its nuclear programme. Bush met Slovenian leaders, who currently hold the EU's rotating presidency, together with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. A draft statement to be released after the summit at Brdo Castle suggests that the US and the EU were ready to threaten extra measures against Iran on top of United Nations sanctions over Tehran's nuclear programme. Bush travels on to Germany later on Tuesday for a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
