EADS wins Ј13bn RAF tanker deal ... government approved a memorandum of understanding with the EADS, a rival of the Italians, as the first step within the negotiations about the Czech purchase of transport planes made by the Spanish company CASA in exchange for five Czech-made subsonic fighters L-159. The Defence Ministry later signed the memorandum with EADS. "Alenia Aeronautica lodged the complaint after it was unlawfully discriminated against by the [Czech] Defence Ministry," the company said in a press release. Alenia Aeronautica, which offered its own aircraft.
Spartan C-27J, says the planned deal was completed without an open tender. "The Czech party negotiated with only a single bidder," it points out. Alenia Aeronautica now expects the EC and the UOHS to check whether the government has violated the EU and Czech laws on public orders. The Czech military seeks new transport planes to replace the Ukrainian-made Antonov An-26s whose life span will expire in 2015. The Italians also previously said that CASA's planes, unlike the Italian-made, do not meet certain criteria NATO had set for the transport of materiel. In reaction to this, Defence Ministry spokesman Andrej Cirtek said a few weeks ago that Prague will have several-month negotiations with EADS from which the draft contract is to emerge. It will include a legal analysis assessing to what extent the whole procedure has been in harmony with the national and EU laws.
