EU warns against food export bans ... part in the protest organised jointly by the LOK and the Health and Social Care Workers Trade Union (OSZSP) supported by the Patients' Association. The protest will begin in the morning and last through 13:00.
For this hour the umbrella Bohemian and Moravian Trade Union Confederation (CMKOS) declared a one-hour token strike against the government's reforms that the unions believe lead to marked price increases. The health care unions have branded the planned health care reform as "the great robbery." The Czech Doctors' Chamber (CLK) said the planned transformation of health care facilities into joint stock companies was a dangerous experiment that will be implemented to the detriment of doctors and patients and will only transfer the many billions of crowns worth of health property into private hands. The unions have called on patients to limit their visits to hospitals on the day of the protest. The doctors' unions and the CLK have called on the government to halt the reforms. The opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) and the Communists (KSCM) have also rejected them. The junior governing Christian Democrat (KDU-CSL) and the Greens also have reservations about the planned transformation of teaching hospitals and health insurance companies into business entities. Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS) recently promised that the teaching hospitals would not be transformed without the consent of the coalition parties. He said the transformation could only be implemented on the basis of law. The OSZSP has about 45,000 members and the LOK about 6000. The CMKOS associates 32 trade union organisations with 540,000 members.
