Ahead of Ireland's referendum on the European Union's Treaty of Lisbon, the German and Finnish foreign ministers have called on the Irish electorate to vote "yes".
At at joint news conference in Berlin German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that they both hoped for a positive result. The Irish are the only EU members to vote on the treaty. All other 26 members are to ratify it through parliament, with passage guaranteed. The Treaty of Lisbon is intended to streamlin decision-making and replace the constitutional process. EU leaders want the treaty ratified by the end of the year, ahead of elections to the European Parliament next year.
