Nepal prepares to go to the polls ... the monarchy. He added that he was prepared to help his nation in whatever capacity he could. Nepal's nearly 250-year-old monarchy was abolished on May 28 by the constitutional assembly, which was set up following a peace deal between Maoist insurgents and mainstream political parties. Gyanendra ascended to the throne in 2001 after a palace massacre in which the then crown prince killed most of the family and then himself.
