Canada's prime minister has officially apologised to natives for more than a century of abuses at state-funded schools set up to assimilate indigenous peoples.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the policy of assimilation was wrong, caused great harm and constituted a sad episode in Canadian history. From the 19th century until the 1970s, more than 150,000 aboriginal children were forced to attend state-funded Christian schools as part of a programme to integrate them into Canadian society.
