It is not clear what will happen if the treaty is rejected. The Lisbon Treaty is designed to streamline decision-making in the bloc. It replaces the EU constitution, which was rejected by French and Dutch voters in referendums in 2005, plunging the bloc into the worst crisis of its 50-year history.
