Zimbabwean police say the secretary general of the main opposition party will be charged with treason and faces a possible death sentence.
Tendai Biti of the Movement for Democratic Change was detained upon arriving at Harare International Airport on a flight from South Africa. Among other things, police accuse him of proclaiming victory in the March 29 elections before official results were published. Zimbabwean authorities are continuing to obstruct the opposition's campaign ahead of the June 27 run-off poll between MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and the incumbent Robert Mugabe. Meanwhile, police have detained the campaigning Tsvangirai for a second time on Thursday.
