A powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale has struck northern Japan.
There are reports that the quake has killed two people and injured scores more in the provinces of Iwate, Miyagi and Akita. Emergency teams have been dispatched to rescue people trapped under rubble. Power supplies to over 20,000 people have been cut, however the government says none of the country's nuclear power plants has been disrupted.
