14.06.2008 - Czech deputy PM sponsored charity while being on welfare - press

The police squad for uncovering corruption reveled this during the investigation into the case concerning Cunek's suspicion of bribery. Cunek, chairman of the junior ruling Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL), told the paper that there was was nothing mysterious in these financial gifts. "I considered it my duty then," Cunek told the paper, adding that his family was able to save the money for charity even in a difficult financial situation. Pravo writes that the Cuneks donated 1500 crowns to charity a month on average in 1996 and 1997. When Cunek Czech KDU-CSL head to release decision on halting his prosecution ...

became mayor of Vsetin in 1998, he was even more generous. After 2002 he donated over 100,000 a year to the church charity, but at that time it corresponded to his official income, the paper says. Cunek resigned from the posts of deputy PM and local development minister last November when his case of suspected corruption was reopened. It was, however, definitively halted a fortnight later and Cunek returned to the centre-right government in April. Apart from the corruption case, Cunek was also suspected of having abused welfare payments, while depositing high sums of 3.5 million crowns in total in his accounts in the 1990s. The police shelved this case in late January as it was not proved that Cunek had concealed incomes that would be significant for the welfare benefit calculation. Cunek also accepted the condition of Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg (for Greens SZ) who agreed with his return to the cabinet only if an audit of his family finances were carried out.
