United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has made an unannounced visit to Lebanon, in a show of US support for the country's western backed government.
Rice passed on her congratulations to newly elected President Michel Suleiman, and praised the government's agreement with the opposition which made his appointment possible. Following talks with Suleiman and Prime Minister-designate Fouad Siniora, Rice called for the United Nations to return its attention to the dispute over the Israeli occupied Shebaa farms. Lebanon wants to see the occupation replaced by interim UN supervision. The Lebanese Shiite militia group Hezbollah, which leads the opposition, cites the Israeli occupation of the Shebaa farms as one of the reasons why it must keep its arsenal.
