Dozens of protesters were killed in a crackdown by Soviet troops and East German police. Speaking at a commemoration to the victims, the Social Democrat politician said June 17, 1953 was a key date in German history. German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung (CDU) said June 17 underscored exactly what the GDR stood for -- a dictatorship. Around a million people participated in the protests in around 700 towns and communities.
