He was able to stand up with the assistance of rehabilitation nurses two days after the surgery. According to available information, Klaus has suffered from troubles with his hip joint for a couple of years, though he was practicing sport actively. When he returns from the rehabilitation centre, Klaus will continue his convalescence at the presidential summer residence Lany chateau, central Bohemia, for about three months. Klaus said he would like to return to office as soon as possible. He received the first working visit in hospital last Monday. Klaus, former long-standing head and current honorary chairman of the senior ruling Civic Democratic Party (ODS), was re-elected president in February for the second and his last five-year term in office. Klaus entered politics during the late 1989 collapse of the communist regime. He was Czechoslovak finance minister, Czech prime minister in 1992-97 and lower house chairman in 1998-2002. He has always enjoyed good health, except for a few viral infections and injuries he suffered while doing sport, mainly tennis.
