Klaus today indirectly called on politicians to seek compromise. "It means that everybody must step up efforts in something and slow down in something else," Klaus told reporters outside the hospital where he underwent a planned hip joint surgery two weeks ago. Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (ODS) admitted in early June that his cabinet might end early. Topolanek said it was hard for him to secure a majority in the Chamber of Deputies. The government coalition has only 100 deputies in the 200-seat lower house and it must rely on support of two former CSSD MPs in crucial votes. Some deputies from the coalition camp sometimes vote with the left-wing opposition, for instance ODS MP Vlastimil Tlusty with another two colleagues, two Green deputies and KDU-CSL MP Ludvik Hovorka. Moreover, the opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) recently withdrew from the gentleman's agreement on "pairing out" of absent coalition or opposition deputies in the Chamber in protest against the coalition's attempt to gain majority in the lower house committees.
