A spokesman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel was interested in achieving a peace deal with its northern neighbour. Israel's Ha'aretz newspaper reported that Olmert had indicated to US President George W. Bush, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, that he was also prepared to negotiate on the issue of the Shebaa farms. Israel captured the triangle of land between Israel, Lebanon and Syria, in the 1967 six-day war. The United Nations says the territory belongs to Syria. Lebanon's radical Islamic Hezbollah movement insists the area belongs to Lebanon and has said it will fight for it.
